The Everyday Mailbag- 3/1/11

Another week of sports brings another week of great questions. Let's see what America wants to know!!!

Q: Will Cam Newton's draft stock rise or fall due to the mysterious bribery tape?
-Corey J., Antioch, TN

A: Well, since the tape hasn't been produced yet or may not even be produced, I don't think it will hurt his draft status at all. Besides, even if this tape does appear, it doesn't change the fact that he is a superior talent.

Q: Who are the winners/losers of the NBA trade?
-Kareem H., Nashville, TN

A: The winners of the trade deadline are New Jersey and Oklahoma City. New Jersey is a winner because they needed a star to build around and help attract more players there. Deron Williams will definitely attract more players there and the New Jersey Nets didn't have to give up as much as they would have had to give up to get Carmelo. The Thunder are winners because they addressed their biggest concerns, a physical post defender and bench scoring, with Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson.

The biggest losers would be New York. New York gave up practically all their good young players for Carmelo and Chauncey Billups. They gave up too much. Now the next couple of yrs they will have to try to build this team thru the draft. They now need a big man and some bench help and it will be hard to acquire that with the two stars they have taking up almost all of the salary cap.

Q: Do you see Deron Williams signing an extension with the Nets?
-Cyrus P., New York, NY

A: I think that Deron Williams will end up signing an extension with the Nets. The Nets have a ton of money available to make even more moves to satisfy their superstar. Plus, I expect Brooke Lopez to be better next year.

Q: How will the new Knicks fare this season?
-Cyrus P., New York, NY

A: I think the Knicks will make the playoffs, but while in the playoffs, they will lose in the 1st round if the matchup isn't in their favor. The reason I believe they will may lose in the 1st round are 1) they don't play defense and 2) they don't have enough front-court depth. Now the front court depth issue could end up not being a factor depending on who they play in the 1st round, but the defense will be ratcheted up, so I expect them to have serious scoring droughts and with the way they play defense, they won't be able to survive those droughts.

Q: Will Carmello Anthony make a difference in New York ?
-James R., Nashville,TN

A: I think he will, but its not going to be Melo that's the ultimate difference-maker in the end, it will be the strength of the supporting cast that he and Amar'e have or what they're able to bring in around them in future years.

Q: Is Timberwolves' Kevin Love for real ?
-James R., Nashville, TN

A: Yes he is. He's a tenacious rebounder with a 3 point touch and post skills. I feel pretty bad for him being in Minnesota because the only help he has is F Michael Beasley.

Q: What do you think about Mike Bibby joining the Heat? I think its a great move. He's still a solid PG who can get up the floor.
-David D,. Murfreesboro, TN

A: I don't think its a good move because as much as Bibby can shoot, but he can't defend anymore and they already have shooters in James Jones, Eddie House and Mike Miller. The Heat are a good team defensively as a whole, but the teams they are competing against in the East(Bulls, Celtics) have electric PGs that the Heat can't help Bibby with because both Rose and Rondo have shooters around them that you can't help off of. With all this being said, Bibby still has to sign there first. Its still in limbo whether he will sign there.
