The Everyday Mailbag- 1/11/11

Another week. Another round of questions. Here's what America wants to know!

Q: Who are the top 5 players in College Basketball do I need to look out for?
-Kareem H., Nashville, TN

A: To be honest, there really aren't some huge standout basketball players in college as much this year. Kyle Singler has been impressive, but the guys with the most potential are young guys like Terrence Jones and Harrison Barnes. Another guy is Enes Kantner of Kentucky. He isn't powerful like DeMarcus Cousins, but his game is more polished and he has the same size that Cousins has. He just isn't ever going to be eligible at Kentucky. So we won't see his skills.

Q: Will the Eagles sign Plaxico Burress after his prison sentence is over ?
-James R., Nashville, TN

A: I don't think they will. They don't have a need for him right now with the receivers they have in place.

Q: What team do you think will pick up Vince Young?
-Iyisha H., Murfreesboro, TN

A: I've got 2 teams: San Francisco and Seattle. If not these two teams, then he will be a backup somewhere next year.

Q: Do you think the Titans could use Cam Newton or do u think he will be a fluke like Vince?
-Marquez C., Nashville, TN

A: I think that the Titans could use Cam Newton. He is a more precise passer than VY and he is mentally stronger. With that being said, he would have to adjust his game to the pro style.

Q: Why did the Titans decided to trade or release Vince Young and not jeff Fisher ?
-Doreen S., Nashville, TN

A: Because you can never let the inmates run the asylum. I think that VY had never grown up mentally and that the last straw was when he cursed out Fisher and left the locker room. You just can't do that.

Q: Since Andrew Luck is returning to Stanford for his senior year who do you think will be the No. 1 pick ?
-James R., Nashville, TN

A: I think Clemson DE Dequan Bowers will be the 1st pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He is a beast!

Q: Other than a QB, which position is the most important position for this years draft for the Titans?
-Kareem H., Nashville, TN

A: They have plenty of needs. There isn't just one need, but what the Titans need other than a QB is a defensive tackle. When they had a dominant defensive tackle(Albert Haynesworth), this defense was out of this world. Since he has been gone, they haven't been the same on defense.

Q: So who is the number 1 QB in the NFL Draft since Andrew Luck decided to return to school? Jake Locker or Cam Newton?
-Corey J., Antioch, TN

A: I think neither Locker or Newton are the number 1 QB for this draft. If I have to pick between these two, I would take Cam. I think Locker is overrated.

Q: How you think the University if Tennessee men's basketball team will fair the next eight weeks without the presence of Bruce Pearl on the sideline ?
-James R., Nashville, TN

A: They will be like they usually are, an up and down basketball team. Tony Jones will be tested as a coach during this time in terms of the rotation and critical decisions.

Q: So I hear that because of certain obligations that weren't met in his Raiders' contract, defensive back Nnamdi Asomugha is now officially a free agent. So with that being said, which team would be a good fit for him?
-Kareem H., Nashville, TN

A: I think the best fit for him, if this is indeed true, would be Chiefs or the 49ers. Both defenses need a star CB. Also, Tampa Bay could use another cornerback to go with Talib.

Q: f this Nets trade for Carmelo becomes official, will this help or hurt the Nets in the long run?
-Kareem H., Nashville, TN

A: The trade will help immediately because Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton are upgrades to what they have currently. Where the trade will hurt the Nets is if they aren't able to re-sign Camelo after this year. If that happens, then the Nets look like fools for mortgaging their future on a rented player. Also, the trade will hurt more in the future because of the age of Chauncey and Rip. They can easily become decrepit because of their age. And their skills are already diminishing.

  1. A couple things.

1.) I’ve heard good things about Kemba Walker, people seem to be pretty enamored with him. They are even talking like he could be a player of the year candidate.

2.) I really hope the Nets don’t pull off the trade for Melo, I want him to go to NY. I’ve heard that the Nuggets have told the Nets to hurry things up or they’re going to NY with the deal. Guess we’ll see if that’s true.

    • I agree that Kemba Walker is a player to watch in college. The thing about him is he is a volume shooter at the point guard position. He is a shooting guard in a point guard’s body. He also has to carry to much of the Huskies offense, which will wear on him as the year goes on.

And as far the Carmelo trade, he can get traded to New Jersey and still end up in New York next year. He has said privately that he wouldn’t sign an extension in New Jersey. So don’t give up hope on that.
